Due to the increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, the average cost of bus transportation in Nigerian cities surged from N649.59 in May 2023 to N1,285.41 in June 2023.

Data extracted from the June 2023 Transport Fare Watch report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has unveiled significant findings.


As per the NBS report, the cost of intra-city bus transportation surged by 98%, amounting to N636, within a single month.


The NBS report also included a detailed breakdown of various aspects, such as bus journeys within cities per fixed route, intercity bus travel charges on a per-person basis, and other modes of transportation.


Comparing year-on-year figures, the report indicated a sharp 120.63% increase in bus fares from the N582.61 commuters paid in June 2022.


Furthermore, the average fare for intercity bus travel per stop climbed to N5,686.49 in June 2023, marking a 42.09% month-on-month surge from May 2023’s N4,002.16.

The average cost paid by city commuters per bus trip saw a 97.88% increase, going from N649.59 in May 2023 to N1,285.41 in June 2023.

Over the year, this cost rose by 120.63%, up from N582.61 in June 2022.


Shifting to intercity travel, the average fare for a bus journey per drop increased to N5,686.49 in June 2023, marking a 42.09% rise on a month-to-month basis compared to May 2023’s N4,002.16.

Over the year, the fare increased by 55.25%, up from N3,662.87 in June 2022.
