The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has ruled in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, ousting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and declaring him the winner of the March 18 election.

Yusuf, who ran as a candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP),

initially won the election in March,

according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, following a hearing of petitions by a three-man panel on Wednesday,

they ordered the revocation of Yusuf’s certificate of return by INEC and instructed the issuance of a certificate of return to Gawuna.

The court invalidated 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total,

deeming them as invalid due to unstamped or unsigned ballot papers.

This ruling occurred approximately six months after the APC candidate conceded defeat to Yusuf when INEC initially awarded him the certificate of return.

In a brief audio statement on March 29, Gawuna, emphasizing his adherence to his Muslim faith,

accepted the election’s outcome, whether in his favor or not.

He mentioned that his campaign team had requested an INEC review of the election results,

which subsequently confirmed Yusuf as the winner.
