Why We Increased Tuition By 400% – UNILAG

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) administration has officially stated the reason behind the increase in tuition fees for undergraduate students.

As previously reported by Naijaloaded, the institution had raised its fees by 400 percent.

In a press release issued by UNILAG’s Public Relations Officer, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university clarified that the decision to raise fees was driven by the prevailing economic conditions in Nigeria.

The management carefully considered input from various stakeholders, including students, parents/guardians, alumni, and staff unions, among others.

After thorough deliberations, it was deemed necessary to make adjustments to the tuition fees for both new and returning undergraduate students.

The university is committed to maintaining its academic standards while adapting to the economic realities of the country.

“The revision in fees, scheduled to be implemented during the 1st Semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Session, has been carefully considered in light of the current economic circumstances and the University’s responsibility to fulfill its commitments to students, staff, and municipal service providers, among other obligations.

“It is important to highlight that the University has refrained from raising its mandatory fees in the recent past.

“As a result, the University’s administration appeals for the understanding and backing of students and all other stakeholders, assuring them of its unwavering dedication to providing the best possible learning experience for all students.”
